Process steps
- Obtain Form DS-2019 from sponsor
- Pay SEVIS I-901 fee ($220 USD)
- Complete DS-160 and pay consular fee
- Attend consulate interview

The interview
J-1 has variants (Work and Travel, Au Pair, Research Scholar, Intern). The officer will test your understanding of the program, your post-J1 plan, and your intent to return. Some categories require the 2-year home residency rule.
