Eligibility requirements

• Be accepted in a J-1 program sponsored by a designated organization
• Have sufficient financial resources
• Demonstrate intent to return to home country
• Meet language and health requirements

Process steps

1. Obtain Form DS-2019 from sponsor
2. Pay SEVIS I-901 fee ($220 USD)
3. Complete DS-160 and pay consular fee
4. Attend consulate interview

• Passport, photo, and DS-160
• Sponsor letter
• Funding proof
• Relevant academic or work history

The interview

J-1 has variants (Work and Travel, Au Pair, Research Scholar, Intern). The officer will test your understanding of the program, your post-J1 plan, and your intent to return. Some categories require the 2-year home residency rule.

Common denial reasons

• Unable to explain the program in detail
• Career plan disconnected from J-1 program
• Suspicion of using J-1 as an immigration path
