The interview
The interview lasts between 2 and 5 minutes. The consular officer will primarily evaluate your ties to the home country under section 214(b). Answer briefly, clearly, and consistently. Do not lie: officers easily detect inconsistencies and have access to international databases.
Common denial reasons
- Not demonstrating sufficient ties to home country (work, family, property)
- Vague or contradictory answers about the purpose of the trip
- Direct family members living undocumented in the United States
- Prior immigration history with violations or overstays
- Signs of immigrant intent (phrases like 'I want to see if I like it there')
- Insufficient or inconsistent financial documentation
